Monday Must Have – Bereitschaftstasche Bags

Picture 5

a53bd70a82{Bereitschaftstasche}

Chiropractically, I should probably consider downsizing my purse. I have an enormous sac that seems to accumulate “stuff” which usually results in me lugging around dozens of tampons, three apples, tonnes of Band-Aids, two books and a miasma of tangled pens, jewelry, sunglasses assumed long lost, receipts and ok, that one time there was an airplant stuck inside Monocle Magazine at the bottom.

That being said, I feel I would be able to downsize slightly if given the chance with these incredible German leather bags. The name “describes a practical and robust bag for transporting a choice of important instruments”, a category I feel may not include a crushed snack pack of Teddy Grams covered in a patina of smushed lip chap.. Beautiful.

Monday Must Have

Picture 2 {via All Modern}

When I miss home, it is more the feelings that I miss than the places exactly. The coffee shop that J. and I would bike to in little Italy had these beautiful Miller/Eames chairs, the smoothest little pieces of architecture you’d ever slide into. It was a Sunday ritual that we’d bike there, early, slowly and laughingly, meandering and quiet. It is not the coffee shop that I miss, not the amazing espresso or the cannoli, but that feeling when you slipped backwards into this chair. It was the feeling of Sundays, of hand holding and love and warmth. I miss those chairs and the spell they cast over your heart.

I came across them while browsing All Modern; the lovely and most talented Anabela over at Fieldguided is having a phenomenal giveaway. Make sure that you check it out and put your name in, everyone needs a little more beautiful in their life. xo

Monday Must Have

Picture 15

Picture 14Picture 13

{Henrik Vibskov via Creatures of Comfort}

Hello and Happy Monday lovelies! Let us all wink and nod and pretend that while I was away I was doing far more productive things than kegstands, gorging on chinese food and reading trashy magazines. Which, while not all I did, was fairly close.

However, I did manage to get the job I really truly wanted that will make us financially stable enough to stop our nightly ritual (opening our online banking, ringing our hands and snifffling), I’m into the swing of things at the paper, and I’ve even managed to make a few friends here and there. The adoreable quaintness of this town is wearing a bit thin – it’s still a 45 minute walk to the grocery store and we don’t have snow yet, our neighbours still (for lack of more grown up words) suck horribly, and sometimes we play a game with the cooking smells in the hallway called “Dead Person or Cheap Fish?” where to be honest, sometimes we hope for the former.

But yesterday was officially my last day of wallowing in self pity (which surprisingly doesn’t make one lose a lot of weight – wallowing apparently not being hard work) and today I brush myself off, put my big girl pants back on, and get back to work at being something more than a gal who is caught up on all seasons of Weeds, True Blood, Californication, Fringe, CSI and the Office.

I am just hoping that when I get those first pair of tights in the mail that they are flattering enough to hide the wallowing thats attached itself to my knees. xo

Belated Monday Must Have – Guest Blogger: Moorea from Rumination Reading Room

A lady after my own heart, Moorea Seal is blogging for me today. I have to say.. Moorea, her stylin’s, her singing, and her words leave me with no less than a big girl crush. She’s the sweetest, and a blogger I can’t wait to meet.. xo lovely lady. (Ps – is that the longest post title or what? sheesh.)

***

Me oh my, what a busy weekend I have had!  A few of my friends and I participated in the 48 Hour Film Festival in Portland, Oregon this weekend.  That mean’t no sleep and many hours of silliness and fun.  My friend Zeek Earl was our cinematographer, producer, writer, director.  You can check out more of his short films and things here:  .  I’ll keep you posted on when the film is up on the internet over at my blog Rumination Readling Room.

My role in the film consisted of costume designer/music writer/performance artist.  I brought loads of vintage dresses for our leading lady, made a bow tie for the lead man, and wrote a song called “Young Love”.  I’d say the movie starts of as a quirky romantic comedy but turns into something wilder, or goofier perhaps.  After all this monkey business this weekend, I just want to curl up on a fancy chaise lounge in my prettiest dress, read a good book and listen to some catchy music!

My dream outfit right now would look something like this:

moorea

My dream chaise lounge would look like this:

Gorgeous_Chaise_Lounge_Sofa_Settee

Reading List:  Anything by Kafka.  Right now I am reading a few of his stories such as Metamorphasis, The Judgement, and The Penal Colony.

And what’s ringing in my ears right now:  The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.  Lordy, these kids are good.  I just saw them in Seattle a few weeks ago and my heart leapt out of my throat.  Listen to “Stay Alive” on their myspace:

pains

I hope all you little lovlies out there had a wonderful weekend, whether it was as bustling and chaoticly fun as mine, or as peaceful and pretty as the day I am dreaming of today!
❤ Moorea

Monday Must Have – God. And things on sticks.

lolipop-pies-20090729-125719

{Pies on a Stick via Neatorama}

Dear Lord.

 Literally. This is a letter.

There is a special place in my body for red wine. That place used to be called my liver. In an (un)fortunate turn of events that may or may not have involved a hot tub, a bottle of wine to myself and a YM-like confessional of the fact nobody wanted to be my date to my high school graduation SO I DIDN’T GO, I spent last evening in the company of some lovely gentleman and a lot of bats? I know right. Dear baby jesus – please make the pain go away, and send me some mini-pies on a stick. Then maybe I can poke them far enough down into my stomach so as not to be reacquainted with them in a scant ten minutes.

 Love,

Andrea

Monday Must Have – Distilled Style

BookCoverG10_14Web1{Available in the US August 12th, by September everywhere else}

The day got away from  me a little bit yesterday… Not sure what happened. Well, not true. When you reward every small movement and triumph over an achey body with ice cream and raspberries and blueberries, there really isn’t much motivation to kick start your day – or at least kick start it in a direction away from the freezer.

As a result I spent most of it reading and listening to music and being a vegetable. It was nice, and a perfect way to preempt the back to work blues. *smile* I can’t wait to snag Schuman’s new book up there – hopefully while we’re traveling through the states I can nab a copy before it hits Canada, it would make for some inspiring car reading. Looking. Are there words? Does it matter..? xo

Monday Must Have – Catch Up!

Blogger loves! I’m back. I feel so much better after an incredible weekend filled with two (2!) wheels of brie, peonies, homemade mango salsa, new sneakers.. the list goes on. Thank you again to all of you for your kind words, encouragement and suggestions, you were just what I needed to get me back on my feet. And then spur on a shopping spree wherein those feet were clad in the damn cutest foral sneakers ever. However before we get there,  I have a few things to catch up on, so lets proceed shall we?

oneortheother

I didn’t even forget about these.. In fact, I’ve been totally attempting to come up with beautiful and interesting ways to ship these babies to… Genevieve and Moorea! I have two of each, so you can both have the same,  or different. The draw was initially just for one, but since I’m such a delinquent blogger of late, I thought that two may just make up for it. Ladies, I will email you later today – congrats, may you wear with style and grace and tell everyone I made them for you, bespoke. (This draw was done in a totally legit manner, where J. butchered both of your names as he drew them out of a mason jar and shouted them like a pro wrestling announcer.)

Every single Monday Must Have and Wanted Wednesday that I’ve missed could be taken care of in this shop. Check out her incredible work here, and join me in feeling envious.

Almost everything I’ve been lacking in inspiration (as demonstrated by my culinary choices of late – I have eaten fish sticks twice, though once I was adventurous and suicidal all at once and ate the beer battered ones…) has been restored by the lovely Esra Roise and her summery drawings. Is it wrong to covet the jewelry and fashions of line drawings? No, I didn’t think so.

And last but not least, a few snaps of my day to day life as of late. As a gift from my grandmother I have a beautiful new MacBook that I find just about as intringuing and confusing and wonderful as string theory. It will no doubt begin a new saga here called “How Andrea Learned To Left Click”.

Monday Must Have

BB504N-BBT41924N{J.Press via A Continuous Lean}

Happy Monday chums. We’re back from C-Ville, dragging our feet just a little. We had a nice time eating our way through the city, picking up antiques, vintage and bicycles all along the way. We managed to amass a considerable  number of records, including but not limited to Stan Getz, Peter Frampton and Gordon Lightfoot.

FARM was every bit as enjoyable as I wanted it to be. It was incredibly well styled with a strong attention to detail. (Because you all know I was there to check out the tables and chairs..) The fixtures all seemed to be indivifually sourced, and I couldn’t imagine how long it took them to find it all; beautiful worn cabinetry, brass bar rails, vintage crates all made it very warm but stayed this side of cute. The waitstaff were  helpful but not cloying (minus the gentleman who kept saying charcuterie “chair -coot-erY” .. just call it the deli bud) and seemed genuinely engaged with their jobs and with the clientele. I had the goat cheese fritter and then the incredible mac and cheese, Jared had the grilled cheese sandwhich, and D+ J both had the shortribs in onion jus with mashed potatoes. I managed to get a bite of everything, and everything from the beef to the 3 cheese grilled cheese was seasoned to perfection. The meat was incredible, and my mac and cheese.. well, it was no contest for one of the best dishes I’ve had. We all shared a plate of pate, cheese and meat and it was well paired (via suggestion) with our drinks as well. Dessert was a white chocolate creme brulee that was one of the creamiest I’ve ever had. It was truly a fantastic meal, and I realized I’m so lucky that Jared enjoys good food in the way he does, I do love me a gentleman who chuckles with pleasure while eatting proscuitto.  He woke up the next morning and asked if we could go back for lunch.. so if you’re looking for two sides of a reviews, I suppose that would neatly sum up his! We loved it.

Coincedentally, I also love a man in a loosely tied bow-tie. I’m trying to convince Jared of this, but he appears to have dug in his heels after the loafers with no socks transition had been made, and is doubting going further. I am thinking I will show him this video to convince him.

How was your weekend? For the first time in a long long time I have a series of weekends off, mostly to eat and drive about the country as a roadie and sleep in cars and be with the band. I believe it may be verging on tragic that my excitement stems from only having to work 5 days a week for a month. Truth be told I only work 4 days this week – I’ve taken one to work on the Summer Street Style issue at SEE. This is the life folks. xoxo

Belated Monday Must Have

So it snowed. Yes. Seeing as how the weather is feeling … whimsical… I’m going to share some whimsical wants of mine from BLESS, availible at Stand Up Comedy. Because I just want to stay firmly focused upon my computer screen instead of looking out the window at the wintery wonderland outside. *grinds teeth*

As per Stand Up Comedy, “BLESS’s collaborators have figured out a way to comment on the small practicalities of daily life in a funny and beautiful way. Their design for industry, performance, fashion, print, and who knows what else is accurately expressed in their slogan “Fits every style!”

Except maybe those in a mid-May snowstorm. xo

Monday Must Have – 1 Ticket to Italy

Happy Monday hunnies. I can only hope that the snow (!!!) of this weekend has moved on and we will have pleasent weather for my first day back to the full-time world of work. I’ve already made a mental jail break and would appreciate the anonymous donation of a plane ticket to Italy. (Also needed:  plain black pumps. Thanks.) Reference Library, who always succeeds in making me feel like I too may one day be cool, have collaborated with Apartamento and opened the Everyday Life Objects Shop in Italy. Knowing full well the aesthetic sensabilities of both, I have only this to say: *sigh*

Monday Must Have – I can’t kill these!

I’m not going to lie folks – a little bummed that I can’t keep anything (save my little succulent) alive. Jared and I were looking at budgies this weekend (another sign I’m not ready for something with a heart beat: I was color co-ordinating the pastel ones with my house) and he carefully pointed out that I couldn’t leave a budgie on a radiator either. And that we’d have to find a way to move it cross country. Which of course, prompted amazing fantasies of us in a truck with a budgie on a string singing away to country tunes with us. A) Budgies do not like strings I assume. B) I do not like country. C) We do not have a truck and I would forget about the budgie and it would fly out the door and I’d make Jared drive around looking for it.

SO – I’m going with what I know here, and I know my little succulent (Plant Watch 2009: Soil moist, leaves healthy, appears pleased with sunshine) is doing well. These little suckers seem to be popular via the web lately and I’ve been coming across gorgeous little photos of them en masse. I’m also REALLY wanting an air plant – does anybody know where to find these? (I was going to make an obscene comment about models and girls who don’t eat. But you can do it for me). Hope you all have a lovely Monday, it’s filled with sunshine here and I couldn’t be more pleased.

{Dress – Dear Golden, Shrug – Allen Company Inc}

Once upon a time, as recently as this Sunday

A girl insisted on acting like it was Monday.

She was glum, she moaned, she flailed around,

Didn’t do anything, melancholia abound.

She cleaned her house (mostly from spite)

Stayed up late and grumped about all night.

Monday came and she felt like a fool,

Whiny and lame and a bit of a tool.

So she did some therapy of the retail hype,

Found some lovelies of the boho type.

Sharing them here in exchange for understanding,

She was all too aware she could be a bit demanding..

Monday Must Haves

Hello pickles. It’s flippin’ Monday. I’m not sure where my weekend went.. oh wait.. yes I do.. here. But we digress. I do feel a little sad that I didn’t do a Sunday Kind of Love post yesterday, but I was feeling a little wacky (as is evidenced by the entirely too personal story). So instead of feigning any sort of cogence this morning, I’m simply going to show you the things that I fell in love with this past week. Even if they have no rhyme or reason.

Because today.. Today I’m joining the Spending Hiatus over at Simply Lovely. I’m tired of pinching pennies because I can’t pinch my pocketbook closed – I would far rather eat good food and spend time being creative than eat out and buy my creativity. (Sorry Etsy.. *Sniffle*) So, I’m joining up for the month of March, and if it goes well (piety can become one heck of a vanity sin) I’ll stick it out for April. Wish me luck.. and enjoy the purge of wants, wishes and loves below! (and don’t worry – even if I won’t be buying, I will still give you lovelies lots of temptation. xo)

Monday Must Have – Lauren Haupt

Alright, since I’ve confessed my financial guilt, then I’m totally.. absolved right? Sure. We’ll go with that. However, it is a little less intimidating to feature a Monday Must Have that comes from a fabulous independent artist such as Lauren Haupt.  I regularly visit her website and Etsy shop and picture myself in her elegant, organic and always inspiring work. Like this:

laurenhaupt

As soon as I can convince Jared to get rid of the cable tv.. (Just joking babe…)

So, happy Monday everyone. We’re back from spring break, Jared left on school business Sunday morning and I am ready to forge ahead through wind, rain or french class to the end of the semester. Tally-Ho.

(Actually – total lie. Since he left I lit our toaster on fire, ate the entire remnants of the Chunky Monkey last night, had a bagged salad for dessert and stayed up until 1am pulling my hair out over school. I threatened him saying he MUST come home, that I would only eat toast in protest, but that went up in smoke when the toaster did. Plus, he says Montreal has good Lebanese food and he has no problem not eating it while I’m being petty. Damn you son.)

Monday Must Have – Vacation for your Brain

Hello all and happy Monday! As previously mentioned, I’ve got the week off for reading week, so I’m spending serious time at the library and the school. But I’ve been spending the weekend taking a brain break, wandering about the internet and through books and magazines.. Thought I’d take you on my brain vacation…

P.S. – One of the loveliest photogs out there is having a giveaway on her blog – Check out Ciao, Chessa! and throw your name in the hat! (And don’t forget to wish her a happy birthday!)

I have a tendency to layer jewellery on in a mildly talismanal way – sometimes just having a lot of shiny dangly things makes me feel stronger. Or alternately, like a crow. I do so love these bracelets by Alison Woodward, they seem to carry enough of their own weight and history and force that I might only need one.

Monday Must Have: Go Team Monday!

monday{Ryan McGinly for Vice}

I’m not going to lie guys, if Sunday night were a stock market indicator for the health of this week.. I think it would probably be Citibank. This is how it went:

J – Do you sometimes forget their are other people in the world A? Other people with eyes? We’re in a grocery store. Get your hands out of your pants.

A – There’s something.. wrong. I don’t.. feel.. right…garg…itch…

J – Thats great Sweetie. Great and gross.

Back at home…

J – A, have you been using this kleenex for toilet paper?

A – *Silence*…*giggle*

J – A?

A- It’s really soft and plush. It makes me feel like I live in a hotel. And it is kinda sparkly.

J – So you…

A- Yeah. It looks like a cross between a 3rd graders art project and Mardi Gras.

J- *silence*…Well. Problem solved.

So really, I figure it can only go up from there. Monday Must Have? Please god, let this week be better than last.

Yes my lovelies, it is Monday. Monday Must Have

I’m not going to lie, there may be a little less Monday Must Have’s and Wanted Wednesdays for the next few weeks – I’m feeling a little gluttonous after such a lush and crazy Christmas, and thinking about Must Haves and Wanted’s just makes me feel oh.. like I’m dipping my turkey dinner in chocolate and having a side of mashed cheesecake. Just a little. But never fear, I’m sure my hoarding capitalist tendencies will return, displayed like pornography all over this blog. (Did I mention my academic interests lay in alienated labour? Yeah. You figure that one out. This blog is like my secret little dirty.. everything.)

However, I couldn’t resist (like mashed cheesecake) these sweet little necklaces from Tatty Devine, especially given my upcoming final semester. So collegiate!

***

I’m sorry the blogging has been a bit spotty here and there lately, but to be honest, I’ve been far more interested in eating as much as I possibly can before I leave here tonight – I’m allowed two 50lb bags, came with one at 30lbs, and am leaving with a full two bags full and an extra 5 lbs on my stomach. Shit hey.

My family really went all out this year – I hate to be the braggy braggy type, but I have to tell you, among the beautiful clothes, art, cookbooks, kitchen supplies… I got a signed copy of a Bukowski book. Those of you who know me.. can extrapolate easily what this meant, and how much I cried. *laugh* I hate enumerating gifts, because they were all so special, especially the time spent with family – but it was pretty incredible.

So I’m signing off for a little bit, I get home early in the morning tomorrrow and work at 7am, so chances are my blogging skills (not to mention my Code Blue skills, which are shoddy at best) are going to be a little… dull. I hope everyone is travelling safely, wish me luck on the airline that shall not be named. xoxo

Oh the cowel. Part sad evolution of the scarf, part mainstreaming of those things we used to call snoods (it’s not a scarf.. it’s not a hood…), the cowl holds a precarious though interesting place in my closet. Can I wear it with a t-shirt? Can I wear it with a dress? Is it solely an outerwear accessory, or can I swap it in for a necklace?

Rose Tung answers all of these questions with yes, yes, no and yes, respectively. These cowls are beautifully constructed, residing somewhere in the between space of architecture, snoods, outergarmets and well strung garnets. They really stand out from a plethora of plain, overembellished and kinda lame cowels on the market with a quiet, beautiful elegance about them – lovely!

Monday Must Have

15330210_21_b

Oh this Monday is off to a slow start! J and I spent last evening putting together and decorating our Christmas tree which looks so lovely in our living room. We decided (even though I pouted) that it would be far better to get a fake tree for the Christmases where we’re still traveling, and then when we settle down and don’t got off in 10 different directions we’ll get a real one.

As festive as our living room feels however, outside is another story. It’s been so warm and lovely (and don’t get me wrong, I love it) that there is zero snow. Not going to lie, that totally influenced my Monday Must Have. I don’t know the last time that I was able to wear high heels like this just out and about in the city this time of year – there is usually far to much snow. So these gorgeous heels from Seychelles..well, they make me feel festive in their own way. (Via Urban Outfitters)

Hello my lovelies! Everytime I do the Monday Must Have I feel like I’m in a little bit of a time warp – how is it that I didn’t JUST do this yesterday? It feels lately like my weeks have been a series of surprise Mondays where I’m constantly shaking my head, thinking “Really? Monday AGAIN?” Yeeps. And it’s also officially one month until Christmas Eve. Etsy help us all.

So, I think it’s only fitting that the Monday Must Have from Restless Things artist Olivia Jeffries is called “Candid Rear View” – we’re all of us looking back a little bit lately I think, if only to think “Really? Monday? Again?”

Monday Must Have

Happy Monday my lovelies! I’ve been given a brief reprieve (or extended a lengthly reprieve) from school today so have taken an extra shift. What does that matter to you you ask? Why, in between giving people dodgy directions and praying nobody almost dies because of me, they’ll certainly be many a blog update! But first, and always, here is the Monday Must Have.

I’m going to be completely honest – I am not sure how I stumbled upon TeeFury. I seem to recall sifting through somebodies archives clicking randomly on outbound links, when I found this amazing little site. (Which, of course, must be so much bigger and more popular than I know, I’m just clueless). TeeFury lists one t-shirt, 9$, for 24 hours. When it sells out, or the 24 hours is up, it’s gone. Every artist gets 1$ per shirt, and thats it. The designs are incredible, I’ve been looking in for a few days in a row, and this is the first one I’ve just loved. So now you know!

Monday Must Have

Good morning my lovelies! It is a new (and very short I may add) week ahead of us! I may have mentioned this before, but I do so love Mondays! It’s like you get a little tiny New Years 52 times a year. So, with a bright and shiny week ahead of me, a full cup of hazelnut coffee beside me a a beautiful, foggy, crisp morning outside me, what more would I want on a Monday morning you ask? Well, something to wear on such a great day! And I think this beautiful 1940’s sailor style dress from Allen Company Inc. would do JUST fine. Sometimes you run into those online vintage shops that have everything; the beautiful, perfect photography, the style, the look that you want – sometimes I swear that when I’m snooping around Allen Company they even have a vintage smell, but the good kind – this is that shop. Let them outfit you for your 52 New Years Days a year. xoxo

Must Have Monday

I’m sitting here with my hazelnut coffee this morning at 7:59 on Monday, and I’m not particularily sure where the weekend went. It seemed to just slip completely out of my fingers! Saturday we layed about and watched movies and ate french toast until 3, when we went to the studio with P. and J. jammed with them for a few house. It’s  nice to just kick back and watch them, and P. (bless her smoky bluesy heart) made/let me sing harmonies on a few songs. What a riot. She’s happy to let me fullfill my life goal of singing onstage. What a peach!

Sunday I got up early to make coffee and crawled back into bed with my Epistemology essay and the Theatetus. Eventually got up and dashed to the grocery store, we made a big Sunday dinner which was in the oven as J. left at about 3 for a rehearsal and I buckled down to write for a few hours. We managed somewhere in there to do 5 loads of laundry and clean the bathroom (the last room in the house to get a good Mr.Cleaning) and take stuff out to the dumpster!

We spent most of the time huddled inside this weekend as everything outside was blowing about in a most disconcertingly HORIZONTAL manner. Seriously. People were being killed by things falling out of the sky this weekend. J. and I both agreed that in our combined decades in this province neither of us have seen wind like we did this weekend. So, my choice for Monday Must Have is a toasty warm hat that if needed, could cover a helmet. Because it feels like that kind of weather, and that kind of week. This little guy has been on my Etsy favorites list for about 3 weeks now, find it at thisolthing.
